M6 Part 1

Изображение
For this project, I decided to create a portfolio for my work as a video editor. A quick advice: you should be looking at these sketches vertically, so that the upper half is what a visitor sees first, and the lower half appears when they scroll.  Prodbyzhenya is my nickname (prod = produced, by, zhenya = shorter version of my full name), so I included it there as my logo. I tried to keep all the necessary details that were mentioned in the "10 steps to the perfect design portfolio" article ( https://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/02/10-steps-to-the-perfect-portfolio-website/ ). These are the logo and the tagline, so it is clear that the portfolio is about a person working with video production. Of course, the portfolio itself, either as a showreel or as several videos embed. In some sketches, I included services, but some led to the "cost calculator" so that the visitors could see the preliminary cost of their work. "About us" section is also there, with...

Avatar Photo Retouching Pt.2

Изображение
On the left, you can see the original photo, and on the right is the "After" I really enjoyed the process, as it immersed me in an exceptionally creative process. I think created an alien from an advanced civilization... Let me tell you how I did this: 1) The first task was to find an image with great resolution that had not been already retouched. This is why I chose a portrait of my friend that I shot in RAW.  2) Just like in out TutVid tutorial, I added a layer with skin texture to the cheeks, chin and forehead. However, in the end, I had to mine this layer above all the rest.  3) To change her face, I started with the eyes, which I cut out with the lasso tool, and changed the size and position with cmd+T. I blended the edges with a soft eraser on low opacity. I repeated this while changing the position of her nose.  4) To remove the eyes (and later nose and brows) from where they originally were, I used the patch tool and took samples of other parts of the...

Avatar Pt. 1

I chose to do the Avatar project. For the work, I chose a simple portrait of my friend that I shot several months ago, because I could not find any unedited image on the web with such a great resolution. I did these sketches using iPad. Really excited about the result!!

Book Cover Design (Sketches)

Изображение
For this assignment, I chose the book called "Aesthetic Intelligence" by Pauline Brown. This is the most recent book I have read, and which I got many insights from. There are two variants of the "original" book cover: an American, and a Russian one - which I saw first and bought it.  unfortunately, I could not find who designed the American version, but for the Russian one, it was Irina Ivanova.  Here are my sketches for the re-design of the cover:   I thought that the cover of such a narrative should give a better understanding of what the author means, as generally, people do not know what "aesthetic intelligence" is. In the book, Pauline Broun describes aesthetics from all the possible perspectives, such as smell, touch, taste, color, material, thickness, etc. Why not make the cover the reflection of some of those aspects? I would like to go beyond simple pictures and text but also work with the materials used - make it fury/glossy/matte - and many eve...

Awareness Poster Pt.2

Изображение
My awareness poster was created to bring attention to the alcohol consumption issue. Everybody knows and feels the consequences of drinking, but continues doing it and seeing it as something fun. For my design, I took the concept of a brochure, where sellers usually put discounts and other special offers for their customers. However, in this case, people see the real "bonuses" of drinking alcohol. I chose the poisonous green color for the liquid to evoke associations with poison.  To draw the glass, I mostly used the "ellipse tool", and "rectangle tool" with no fill and 30px stroke, and later filled in the color with the "paint bucket tool". To create the curve, I drew a line with the "line tool", and later distorted it using "liquify". The "special offer" sign is also a "rectangle tool", but with curved angles (75px). When I added copy to the poster, I thought that it should have some background highligh...

Awareness Poster Sketches

Изображение
I have decided to create an awareness poster on the issue of alcohol consumption, and it being too common.      1. 1 In the first sketch, I tried to show that a person who drinks alcohol has less power and energy to socialize, and eventually ends up alone, sleeping. On the table, you can see a green ">" sign, which divides the table and emphasizes that water is better, and it gives you more.      1. 2 This might be a confusing one, but my intention was to illustrate that healthy people are looking into the future, because they have more energy, and obviously they think of their health in 30 years. Unlike the ones drinking alcohol, who may be sorry for what they have or have not done.      1.3.  The third concept is about two variations of the same person looking at each other, where the upper one is healthy looking, and the second one is looking tired, drunk, and sad.      1.4. Personally, I l...

Hijacking: Part 2

Изображение
For this project, I chose the issue of quick dopamine excess in modern world. This is one of the problems I find important to pay more attention to, because we live in the times of endless entertainments, and life should be more than just that. When scrolling through social sites, watching TV shows, listening to music all the time, we keep receiving dopamine flashes, therefore feel good. Any time people feel boredom or start getting negative thoughts - they tend to replace it with another dopamine surge. At first glance, such activities do not seem to be harmful. However, not if we're dealing with excessive amounts.      I chose this image of Tony Montana from "Scarface" movie, because his  facial expression represents the exact feeling of "having too much". He could be looking like this at anything else besides drugs (as in the original frame). Especially, at something that used to give a lot of pleasure, but later stopped. Just like with an...
